BOPIS + SHIP-TO-STORE OPERATIONS

How can online pickup work smoothly for your stores and customers?

Sqquid helps retailers connect online orders, location inventory, and store fulfillment for BOPIS and ship-to-store workflows. The customer gets a convenient place to collect a purchase, while the retail operation needs to coordinate where the item comes from and how the store prepares for the handoff.

A pickup option on the storefront is only the beginning. The store needs usable availability information, a clear order workflow, and an agreed process for preparing the purchase. Connecting those activities helps your team make pickup part of everyday retail work, with the supported channel and store configuration guiding the details.

What is the difference between BOPIS and ship-to-store?

BOPIS means buy online, pick up in store, typically using inventory already at the pickup location. Ship-to-store, also called buy online, ship to store or BOSS, brings the order to the customer’s chosen store from another fulfillment location before collection. Both end at a store counter, but the work before that handoff is different.

That distinction matters when planning availability and readiness. Stock already on the store shelf requires picking and preparation; stock coming from elsewhere also needs a shipping and receiving handoff. Your customer promise and staff process should reflect the actual path the item will take.

Why does reliable store inventory matter for pickup?

A pickup promise depends on stock at a particular location. A chain-wide total cannot tell a customer whether the chosen store can prepare an item, and a quantity in a system still needs to reflect what staff can find. Pickup therefore connects online availability with store inventory accuracy and the process for handling discrepancies.

Sqquid coordinates location inventory with connected channels and fulfillment rules, helping retailers bring that context into their online and store operation. Our multi-location inventory page explains the coordination behind availability. Good receiving, counting, and stock-adjustment practices remain part of making the information dependable.

What handoffs should you plan before offering pickup?

Start by identifying who prepares the order and how the store knows what needs attention. For BOPIS, follow the path from the online order to the person locating the item. For ship-to-store, also identify the sending location, the receiving process, and the point at which the store can treat the purchase as ready for collection.

Sqquid supports pickup within its broader store fulfillment operation, alongside inventory coordination and location-based routing. Checkout eligibility, customer messages, collection confirmation, and exception handling need to be reviewed for your specific connected systems and store process. Walking through those responsibilities makes the implementation concrete without assuming that every storefront or POS handles pickup in the same way.

If the order will ship directly to the customer instead, explore shipping and fulfillment. For the overall coordination across online channels and locations, see order management.

What else should you know before launching store pickup?

Is curbside pickup the same as BOPIS?

Curbside is a pickup handoff outside or near the store. It shares the need for accurate local stock and preparation, while adding the store’s process for meeting the customer. Our curbside pickup guide explores the practical considerations in more detail.

Does Sqquid support both stores and warehouses in fulfillment?

Yes. Sqquid coordinates inventory and fulfillment across stores and warehouses. How locations participate in pickup or ship-to-store depends on your supported connections, routing requirements, and receiving and collection process.

Can we promise same-day pickup everywhere?

That promise should follow actual stock availability, store staffing, preparation time, and connected-platform behavior. A pickup connection alone does not establish a service level for every location or order, so review what each participating store can reliably deliver.

What should we bring to a pickup workflow review?

Bring your ecommerce platform, POS, pickup locations, inventory sources, and an example order. If ship-to-store is part of the plan, include the sending and receiving steps so we can review the complete handoff and confirm the supported setup.

How could pickup fit the way your stores actually work?

Tell us which pickup option you want to offer and where the preparation becomes difficult. We will review the inventory, order flow, and store handoffs together so the next step reflects both the customer experience and the people delivering it.
